Cyclocross festival for round 2 of YHPSCL

The sudden hail storm during the year 6 boys race.

Round 2 on November 9th of this year's cycling league was styled as a festival of cycling focussing on cyclocross skills and games followed by short races for the 117 year five and six riders from eleven Hackney schools. Split into four groups the riders rotated around Mabley green on a carousel of different coached activities.  One group focused on starting a mass start race looking at being ready and quickly moving up through their gears. The next group played the peanut game where they chase one another around peanut shaped course with tight turns trying catch or not be caught by the other riders. This game is great for improving cornering technique - very important on twisty turning courses you get in cyclocross and mountain biking and also greta if you want to riding in the woods.

The third group worked at climbing and descending short hills on the Mabley green bumps incorporating the turning work form the previous game. This one is all about wear to position yourself on the bike to get up and down quickly and efficiently. The last game was all about getting on and off the bike whilst moving - very important when you come up against an obstacle that can't be ridden. Also good for general riding when you are in a hurry to set off! Whilst they were carrying out these activities some riders were awarded bonus league points for fair play.

Then the sun shone on the girls race this time.

New season -new format - new tarmac but same steep Springfield Hill.

12/10/23
Eager to start year 4s line up at what they thought was the start of the hill climb - it was actually 20 metres back down the hill behind them.

The 2023-24 season started last Thursday - yes not Friday - at the usual venue for the beginning of the league up at Springfield on the dreaded hill climb. Eight teams representing ten schools were in attendance from years 4,5 and six. The hill had been freshly relayed in nice smooth tarmac so fast times were expected. Also what should have been expected was the weather to finally turn. It felt like someone had flipped the switch from summer to autumn overnight. The rain let up in time for the racing but would slipping wheels mean we wouldn't get the fast times we were hoping for?

The year four girls competition was won by Greta from Jubilee in time of 47.03 seconds from Matt - Gayhurst on 54secs with Jess of Jubilee third on 57 seconds. Special mention goes to Nova from Millfields who chain slipped off close to the bottom of the hill and she then ran all the way to the top.

League results and final round round for 2022-23

Apologies firstly as it seems I started this then forgot to publish it back in July at the conclusion of the 14th season of the Young Hackney primary Schools Cycling League.

14/7/23

The final event of this season was the Circuit race at Lea Valley Velopark for years 4,5 and 6.  Unfortunately like the rest of July Bastille day was rather wet meaning some schools never made the trip over to the Olympic park. Those who did come did have enough gaps in the rain to race.

The year four girls was won by Marina from Gayhurst followed by Rosie and Beatrix in 2nd and 3rd for Millfields.
